Both journalism online and print went to an A’s baseball game, which feels like many moons ago. During this trip our sources of transportation were our feet and the Bay Area Rapid Transit aka BART.
Upon our arrival you could feel the excitement in the air. The atmosphere that makes a baseball game one of those unique all-American experiences. Five dollar hot dogs would seem ridiculous anywhere else, but at an arena it’s a necessity–along with bags of candy, sunflower seeds, and peanuts that were snuck in purses and backpacks.
Trying to capture a vendor’s attention and trying to sneak in a picture with Stomper (the A’s elephant mascot) is more difficult than it sounds, especially if you’re two teenage girls trying to push your way through a dozen seven year olds. Taking a picture with Stomper was tried twice and the individual who actually wanted to have a picture with the oversized animal was ignored and I was attacked with a faux trunk.
Memories were made as the Asian snow cone vendor took a few pictures with his biggest fan (ahem Dylan Mahood ahem) and when my friends and I decided to walk to the other side of the stadium for food. Even the man in the brown sweater and sunglasses (who refused to take them off while it was raining) who talked incessantly couldn’t ruin a glorious day, even if the home team lost … badly. At least Cocoa Crisp’s made a homerun in the first inning in attempt to start a rally. That was something significant the Athletics achieved during the nine innings.
