After two seasons as our volleyball team’s coach, Samuel Pricer resigns and will not be the volleyball coach for the 2011-2012 boys’ volleyball team. Coach Sam, as his players used to call him, is an alumnus of Washington High School and played varsity volleyball during the 2005-2006 season. A competitive and talented volleyball, Sam started as the JV coach for our volleyball team. Last season, he had opportunity to coach the varsity team. However, this year Sam decided to join Marines and could not coach this upcoming season. Coach Sam said “it was a fun and exciting experience seeing my players progress. I enjoy the sport of volleyball and look forward to participating in the sport in the future.”
Our boys’ volleyball team looks to rebuild. With many talented seniors leaving the team and no coach, the current players are left adrift. They seek an excellent coach and players to step up as leaders of the team. Also, players are organizing open gyms to get ready for the upcoming season. Junior Anant Gill, who played for the varsity team last year looks forward to get back on the court. “I like open gyms, because they are a good way to adjust to the demands of the season. I believe that our team will be competitive this year and we will see how far we get.” Though our boys’ volleyball team has lost key pieces on the team, the upcoming season is promising as current players are ready to fill in the roles.

On November 11, the girls’ volleyball team had their last home game against Irvington. Lots of people came to help support and cheer on the team. The team lost 3 games to 1. For seniors Darra Lanigan, Katie Majumdar, Jennifer Mullaly, Caitlin Jorgens, Francesca Santeramo, and Emily Marden however, it was also senior night. The seniors, all whom play varsity, received balloons, flowers and more from their fellow volleyball teammates and parents after being walked down the red carpet by their escorts. Touching speeches were made for the seniors by their teammates as well, all showing how important the seniors were to the team. The seniors had mixed emotions about the nights, some expressing their sadness because their last season was almost over, while also saying that they were happy that they got the chance to play. It was altogether a sad and happy night. The team still has MVAL’s however for anyone that wants to go and support them.

The boys varsity volleyball team is heading into the post-season playoffs. With a 7-3 league record and a 16-7 overall record, the team finished off as one of the top three teams in the Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL). They were on a two-game win streak prior to losing to Mission San Jose at the end of the season.
“We didn’t do as well as we hoped for, but we’re looking forward to playoffs and hopefully beat out our competition there,” outside hitter senior Tommy Fowler said.
The MVAL playoffs begin in mid-May. The team hopes to continue their home dominance. In the season, they have had nine wins and two losses, both in games played at Washington.
The 47 points scored during the season was good enough to finish in third place. They also were second in the league in defense by allowing only a mere 21 points on the year.
Despite the tough loss on Senior Night to Mission, the Huskies aim to bounce back and do well in the volleyball playoffs.

After first round of league play, the girls volleyball team looked unbeatable.
They played well as a team and defeated Mission San Jose in three games, placing them first in league. However, while on their way to league title with a 10-2 record, the girls were defeated by James Logan, resulting in a tie with Mission San Jose. A tie-breaker for league title took place Oct. 30 against Mission San Jose, but was played on neutral grounds–Kennedy High School. That way, neither team could have home court advantage. The Huskies lost, 0-3, making them league co-champions with Mission San Jose.
Home court would have definitely helped the lady Huskies considering they were 8-0 at home and 4-3 on the road.
Without the “Argus player of the week,” junior Konami Yokoyama, in the lineup, the lady Huskies struggled and lost to Irvington High School, ending their 2009 season.
However, the North Coast Section (NCS) committee held a meeting Nov. 8 about extending the amount of teams entering in the playoffs this year, and the Huskies got lucky.
The first game, round one of NCS playoffs, will be held Nov. 11 against James Logan at home.
With Yokoyama back on the court, with 193 kills season kills and senior Cody Bates’ season average of 139 digs, the Huskies will be well off.

The girls volleyball team took on the James Logan High School Colts Sept. 29. The first game was high-scoring, but the Huskies won 30-28. The second game was close, but WHS lost momentum, 22-25. With the series tied one-to-one, the Huskies decided to take charge by winning the next two matches.
“We practiced hard all this week for this victory,” senior Cody Bates said.
The Huskies are now in second place in the MVAL behind Mission San Jose High School.

Girls volleyball started early this season, as the Huskies played their first league game Sept. 17 away at Newark Memorial High. The Huskies started out strong in the first game, winning a close match 25-21, but started losing focus soon afterwards. Losing the next two games to the Courgars 20-25, 17-25, the Huskies were not playing their best game. However, the girls rallied back the next game winning 25-20, and pushed through the tie breaker 15-6, to a final victory. Junior Konami Yokoyama had 8 kills, 3 blocks and 5 digs.
“It was pretty evenly matched between the two teams, going all the way to game five,” sophomore Chessie Santeramo said.
The next game is against last years league champions, Mission San Jose, Sept. 22.
