For the 8th year in a row, Washington’s competitive cheer team won 1st place at the annual USA Boardwalk Cheer and Dance Competition in Santa Cruz. Although the Huskies cheer team is already split into Varsity and Junior Varsity, all cheerleaders must audition to be a part of the competition team. The mixture of Varsity and JV girls made no difference when they united in celebration of snatching 1st place.

The girls were nervous: anxious to beat Irvington High School, who they considered to be a top rival. Although the Huskies only competed against two teams, Irvington and Watsonville, tensions were high to continue their 1st place streak.

The team performed to a mix of “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga and “OMG” by Usher ft. Will. i. am. Despite dropping one stunt during the cheer, the girls recovered and continued on with a unique dance routine influenced by Lady Gaga.

After taking 1st place, the team can’t wait for what this year holds. Senior and head captain, Willow Osage, says, “It felt amazing to continue our first place tradition for the 8th year in a row! And I know with the great team that we have this year, it is only the beginning.”

CSF allows non-members on trip to university

The California Scholarship Federation (CSF) allowed non-club members to attend their field trip to UC Santa Cruz, Oct. 30 due to a decline in member interest.

Club president Emily Khuc decided to open the trip to all interested Washington students, in order to cover the various costs such as transportation.

Senior Chris Valdez was one of the students who benefited from this decision.

“I thought that the UC Santa Cruz trip was very well planned. The tour was informative and the campus was great. Everything was organized well, and I definitely want to join CSF in January,” Valdez said.

The trips gave students an opportunity to take a campus tour as well as attend an admissions presentation and experience the dining hall. Students were able to get a realistic view of typical college life at UC Santa Cruz.
The annual trip is meant to give college-bound students, especially seniors filling out their applications, a chance to visit a college campus before applications are due in November.

“[Visiting the college] gives students a much better idea of what’s going on and what the environment of the campus is like…also it’s more convenient and nice to go on the tour with your peers rather than your parents,” Khuc said.
Khuc does not foresee the field trip being open to all students in the years to come. The annual field trip is considered one of the privileges of being in the club, along with the banquet in the spring and scholarship eligibility senior year.
Any students interested in joining CSF can apply for membership in at the beginning of the second semester in February.

Cheerleaders seventh year on top

Being a cheerleader at Washington High School is not an easy task. They cheer at all school football games, home or away, and they practice for future tournaments and competitions. The girls went all the way to Santa Cruz Sept. 26 to see if their practice had paid off. In past sixth years, the girls have owned this tournament’s title. And now, in their seventh year, they’ve done it again.

“It’s worth working really hard in practice, as long as you come out on top. Especially because it’s my senior year, I want to go out with a bang and win all the competitions we have on our schedule,” senior varsity squad captain Shay Mozzetti said.
