Lunch hour at Bravo Medical Magnet High School on Wednesday, April 13, 2011. After the Los Angeles, California school district decided to turn down the offer for celebrity chef Jamie Oliver to work with the district for his television show, the district is showing off its kitchens and taste-testing center. It is a privilege to be able to have an open campus during lunch. Both elementary and junior high schools have a closed campus during lunch time, but in high school we are allowed to go where we please. Thus, many freshmen look forward to this option when they first come to high school.
Senior Tim Thao believes “ it’s okay to eat off campus everyday because there are a variety of places and staying on campus means eating the same food everyday.”
I think there are both positive and negative sides to this. It can be refreshing to eat out once in a while, but going off campus on a regular basis has its downside. School can get stressful sometimes and leaving the campus for half an hour is relaxing, but eating a McChicken everyday can have an impact one’s well-being. The oil that is usually reused plenty of times can lead to various heart problems and obesity.
Packing a lunch or purchasing lunch from the school cafeteria could be a much wiser decision. The school board has restrictions on what school cafeterias can sell. The food has fewer calories and trans fats, which makes it much healthier. Because of this, you know that you are not eating a meal that can be bad for you.
Aside from impacting one’s health, eating off campus everyday can be expensive. Senior Angela Abrea doesn’t eat out everyday because, “…it will hurt my wallet!”
Generally, while seeing the advertisements can get tempting, I think it’s better not to indulge too often. To me eating out once a week is better than eating out every day.

The ice cream selection offers more variety than just vanilla and chocolate. Instead there are flavors such as rocky road and cookies ‘n cream. They’re perfect choices for hot weather. The pricing varies from about $1.75 to $3, depending on the number of scoops and type of cone. (Customers are given a choice of a regular cone or a waffle cone.) On the wall behind the register there are pictures of the $5 dishes you can order, which are fairly good deals. Although other meals and plates aren’t listed on restaurant wall menu, they are on the pamphlet menu, which I found confusing because I did not know the other plates existed until I saw the pamphlet The individual plates are priced between $4.50 to around $8.25. The party trays vary from $25 to $50. They also sell sodas for $1 and a 6 pack for $5.
Fortune Cookie is a good restaurant for its commendable service, flavorful food, and convenience. My personal favorite is the chow mein combo plate with chicken. The food was tasty but bland. Nevertheless, Fortune Cookie’s fast food service is perfect for students who have to hurry back to class after lunch. Verdict: B+
