The annual Fremont PTA Reflections was held on Dec. 3 from 3 to 5 PM at American High School. All schools in the Fremont district, including preschools, participated in this event.  Many students from WHS’s AP Literature class participated in an effort to gain extra credit.  However, only three students proceeded to the district level competition.
For more than 40 years, PTA Reflections have given students ranging from preschool through grade 12 the opportunity to create works of art for recognition.  There are six categories to which a student may enter: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts.  Also, there are four grade divisions: preschool (Grade 2 or up to age 7), intermediate (Grades 3-5), middle/junior (Grades 6-8) and senior (Grades 9-12). Each year, there is a different theme to which students produce works of art for submission. This year’s theme was “Diversity Means…”

WHS students who will proceed to the district competition include: seniors Daniel Tsay for Film Production, Mazin Mahgoub for Literature and Matt Nowzari for Musical Composition.
“I think it’s a great way to bring out the creative side of students and allow them to express themselves through artistic means. At the district level, I hope to win and to continue to represent Washington all the way up to the national level,” Senior Daniel Tsay said.
“I am not very optimistic about the Peralta District level, as there are many other talented musicians around and about. I’ll be happy as long as I get some sort of recognition for my work. Quite honestly, I’m content with winning the at FUSD level,” Senior Matt Nowzari said optimistically.
These students will now be competing for the following awards: Outstanding Interpretation Awards, Awards of Excellence, Awards of Merit, Honorable Mention and most importantly, the National Reflection Award.

During the Sept. 24 match, the boys water polo team left no room for debate in who was the better team in the pool, 22-1. At halftime, the score already stood at 10-1 with Huskies in lead. In the second half of the game, WHS dominated American, scoring 12 goals and rejecting every ball aimed at the WHS goal line, largely due to senior Chris Hughes’s eight saves, five of which came in the second half.

On offense, the key players were seniors Tyler Ocon, Jeremy Correia, sophomores Brock Liebhardt and Mitchell Yohanna.

Correia, who was repeatedly fouled during the course of the game, said of his performance, “If they’re going to hang off me, I’m going to shoot the ball.”

Coach Gene Kendall, after the conclusion of the game, had nothing but glowing praise for the team’s performance.

“We played great defense, we only let them have one goal the entire game. On offense, we were very balanced, as we had multiple guys scoring,” Kendall said.

A look at the scorecard proves his point, as every player scored at least one goal. If tonight is any indicator of the rest of the season, the boys water polo team is going straight to the championships.
