Senior Emily Gibson signed a national letter of intent to play softball for San Francisco State University on Novermber 2. The SF State Gators participate in Division II of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). The SF State softball coach emailed her the document that would certify her commitment to the team. She was given an opportunity until November 9 to sign it. Emily had been scouted by recruiters and coaches in the recent fall and summer seasons while also attending two of SF State’s very own clinics. Although she has been recruited onto the team, she will not be given any athletic scholarships due to SF State’s financial limitations. For this reason, Emily will have to fund-raise for herself in her later years.
Emily has been playing softball since she was eight years old. Her primary position is pitcher and her secondary position is first base. She is a four year varsity player and a member of a traveling club team for six years. On her club team, South Bay Stars Gold, she is ranked at the highest level: 18 Gold Level. Her commitment to softball is unquestioned. She practices all year long and takes only one week off. She is currently in her winter season of training which consists of pitching drills and gym workouts. One of the biggest impacts on Emily’s decision to play for SF State was meeting the softball team. Emily declared, “All of the girls are extremely nice… In a way they all reminded me of me, so that made me feel right at home.” Emily is also attracted to the fact that there are not as many tourist and attractions near the university although it maintains an “in the city” vibe. Emily’s friends and family have a positive reaction towards her recruitment, proud that she has reached her goals and is attending a good school. After SF State, Emily plans to leave softball behind and start a career in business. However hard it may be to let go of softball, Emily looks forward to the future: “I’m very excited for SF State. I’m ready to work hard both on and off the field.”
