The track and field team is attempting to raise money for a non-profit organization called Dig Deep. Dig Deep raises money to dig wells and get water tanks for countries without clean water. Athletes are supposed to get sponsors. Freshman Stephanie Van Sprakelaar’s family was one of the first to donate.
“I like the idea that [track coach] Ben is creating a fundraiser for something besides track, and I think it’s really cool that we can be a part of it,” Van Sprakelaar said.
Scoring is five points for first place, three points for second place and one point for third place. Last year the team scored a total of 1500 points throughout the year. Dig Deep was started by coach Ben Vose’s friend, who served in Kenya for five years. When he came back from Kenya, his son, who played football, decided that he would raise money for every touchdown he scored.
“It’s pretty awesome when you see a kid wanting to make a difference in the world,” Vose said.
Vose “wants the students to be conscience of somebody other than themselves, and use their talents and passions to help others.”
He hopes to make improvements next year to involve more participants.
