During the 2010 annual Powderpuff game, the only touchdown made came early in the first quarter when quarterback senior Kaley Martin launched a forty-yard pass to wide receiver Sabrina Swayzer.
Swayzer was the “go-to” player on offense for the seniors. The seniors tried to get the ball in her hands as much as possible to help make plays, whether it was rushing or receiving. Late in the fourth quarter, Swayzer scored another touchdown, but was called back due to a holding penalty.
Junior Valencia Hamilton was a key player on both offense and defense for the juniors, but she could not penetrate the senior’s solid defense.
The senior class won this year and last year, a rare achievement for any class, considering that the seniors are typically the favorites to win every year.
“I would rather get blown out than lose a close game,” junior Kayla Ford said.
Good coaching makes a solid team, and the coaching staff worked the players hard. Their plan was to execute every aspect of the game. In the early weeks of the season, overwhelmingly more juniors than seniors showed up to practice. It wasn’t looking too good for the seniors early on. A month before the big game, more seniors started showing up more consistently, and they won their practice scrimmage against the juniors. Two weeks before the game, the both team looked sharp, running through their playbook’s like they’ve been practicing all year long.
“It feels good to win two years in a row. If the girls didn’t put in all the work they did, it wouldn’t have never happened,” head coach senior David Ross said.
Juniors plan to win next year.
