The Washington Huskies were ranked thirteenth overall in the NCS after big wins over Mount Eden, Antioch and College Park. In the Huskies first game of the season against Mount Eden, Feb. 27, the Huskies smashed 12 runs, eight of them in the ninth inning. The boys defeated the Monarchs 12-2.
After eight preseason games, the boys baseball team finally opened up league play against Mission San Jose High School at home, March 24.
“It was a battle and we came out on top with good defense and clutch hitting,” senior Billy Nevin said.
The Huskies fell behind early in the game, down by three runs by the third inning. Mission San Jose’s pitcher, junior Matt Imhoff played exceptionally well, with 11 strikeouts. After adjusting to the fast pitches, the Huskies came back, starting with a bunt by junior AJ Bagoje, as junior Robert Smith came through, giving the Huskies their first run by the end of the fourth inning. Still down by two runs going into the fifth inning, senior Mark Wik hit a three run home run, giving the Huskies a 4-3 lead over the Warriors. Despite Mission’s run at the top of the seventh inning, Washington kept the lead, giving the Huskies their first league win. With a 1-0 league record, the Huskies are off to a good start.
“Every day we just need to work harder,” senior Jared Yagi said, “We can’t take anyone in league lightly, but as long as we play up to our potential, we have the ability to beat every one.”
The Huskies face the Vikings March 31 away at Irvington.
