After arbitrary weeks of rain and bad weather, the sun has finally come up and the boys are out. However, the team has hit several obstacles, losing to James Logan (3-4), Irvington (1-6), Kennedy (3-4) and Mission San Jose (0-7). But with perserverence, the boys scraped a close win against Newark Memorial (4-3). They now hold a 1-4 season record.
“We made several errors in volleying and serving, but we’re going to beat [James Logan] next time,” sophomore Allan Chan said.
Chan played JV two singles last season as a freshman and after intensive off season training, now plays varsity two doubles with junior Andrew Ko.
“Many of our players are still getting used to the season itself and the mindset of the competition,” coach Matthew Brahbam said. “Hopefully we’ll find our competitive spirit and match toughness in the second half of our season.”
With 10 varsity players, 10 junior varsity, six reserves and only six courts, the team struggles to fully train each member of the team within their two hour practices per day.
“We’re not doing as good as we should be doing due to weather,” senior Kishan Patel said. “Our wind barriers are crap.”
Any student walking towards the senior parking lot can tell you how terrible the tennis barriers look piled and spread across the ground. Despite the multiple attempts of the players to reestablish the wind barriers, they never seem to last longer than a month. Without secure wind barriers around the courts, the game of tennis merely becomes a game of the weather, unpredictable and frustrating. It even threatens home court advantage.
“We’ve had really close scores against Logan and Kennedy with 3-4 for both matches so that shows we’re getting there. Right now, we just need to make a come back during the next matches to off set those losses,” senior Cewai Ho said, “We’re going to need to work on our technique and our overall game in order to prove ourselves so we’ve got a long road ahead of us and some of the guys just need to know that they have their school behind them.”
The boys face Irvington again April 1 away at Irvington and start the final half of their season.
