During the Rob Vares basketball tournament, the Huskies played Mount Eden High School, Nov. 26. Eight teams gathered for the traditional three-day tournament. The Huskies’ offense started off running on all cylinders, ending with a win with a score of 73-38 against Mount Eden.
In the following game against Northgate, it was more difficult to achieve victory. The Huskies were leading up until the third quarter when Northgate rallied back with a barrage of three-pointers to bring their team to a two point lead. In the end, the Huskies overcame the bombardment of three point shots with a consistent offense and powerful defense.
The final game was a classic championship match-up between Washington and Castro Valley High School. Both teams went back and forth with the lead. With about ten seconds left, Castro Valley had a chance to tie with a two-pointer. They missed with the first two attempts and eventually got a tip-in with about three seconds left on the clock to tie the game. The Huskies coach called a time-out to design a winning play. He wanted enough time for the Huskies in regulation to get a decent shot off. Even though the ball was heaved, it fell short of the hoop. During overtime, the two teams played with the same level of offense and defense; neither teams let up. All the free throws the Huskies missed during the entire same came to haunt them with a loss of 71-74.
The Huskies finished second in the tournament, which was an improvement from fourth place last year. With a great start to the season, the boys basketball team will be one to watch this year.
