Double effort, double the victory

Double days for water polo have definitely helped create early success for the girls, winning their first four games.

“Our practices have helped a lot, making us a stronger team. Even though the workouts are hard we know they are for the best,” sophomore Erin Swardenski said.

Starting two weeks before the school year began until the end of September, the water polo team practiced twice a day. The girls are in the pool by 5:30am in the morning, out before first period, and back in at 5pm. Parents have complained that kids weren’t getting enough sleep because of the early practice times and school work. Returning players admitted that practices this year are much harder than last, but the conditioning does seem to be paying off.

“During the 4th quarter were not as tired as last year,” sophomore Katelyn Clark said.

At practice the girls do several intense drills such as jumping jacks in the water, emptying 5 gallon jugs filled with water over their heads, sprints across the pool, treading water with chairs above their heads, counter attack drills, and many others. Aside from drills, the girls do meditation before games, which help them focus. The pool had recently been having problems with the heater, reaching below 40 degrees, but luckily the girls were able to practice at Meyer community pool while the Washington pool was being fixed.
