The cross country team competed in their first two races this season, fairing well at both the Ed Sias Invitational in Martinez and the De La Salle Invitational. Senior Ben Rich placed fifth for varsity boys at the Ed Sias Invite and is currently ranked third in NCS D1 cross country. Freshman Nolan Petersen won the boys ninth grade race, holding off the national 800m junior champion over the last 100m of the race.

“We have a lot more girls on the team, so I know we are going to do better than last year,” sophomore Emma Johnston said.

Junior Jesse Chestnut placed twenty-third at the De La Salle Invitational, while Rich placed tenth. Chestnut credited himself and the teams’ success to their tough practices.

“We have been running a lot,” Chestnut said.

The season’s outlook seems to be good based on the teams running so far.

“We’re going to get first in league. We have been training hard,” junior Maggie Sullivan said.

The teams are large with 25 girls and 26 boys on the roster.
