Sibling rivalries are common, but juniors Craig Perry and Jocelyne Yamaguchi and their freshmen siblings, Grant Perry and Caitlin Yamaguchi, know how to leave their rivalries at home.

“I love being able to swim with my big sister,” Caitlin said. “She teaches me backstroke technique and is always there for support after a bad race.”

Jocelyne and Caitlin are both on the 400-yard freestyle relay team and they also race in the 200-yard medley relay together.

“Swimming on the same relay feels like we’re swimming for the same goal and it’s a cool feeling,” Jocelyne said.

As for the brothers, Grant admitted that Craig is more competitive than him, but he also feels more competitive when swimming with his older brother. Grant has been swimming since he was six years old and learned a lot from Craig.

Even though the Perrys occasionally get in fights at home, they never let it get involved when they are swimming together in the pool.

“There is just the normal joking around with me and Craig at practice, but we aren’t ever serious,” Grant said.

Jocelyne and Craig make sure to encourage their younger siblings. They support and enjoy working together on the same team.

“Craig always tells me to keep doing what I do and really work hard,” Grant said.

Craig and Jocelyne think highly of their younger siblings. Caitlin and Grant are only freshmen and they are already on the varsity squad.

“In the future, I think Caitlin will do freaking amazing. She’s only a freshman right now, so she can only go uphill from here,” Jocelyne said.
