Golf team gets new coach

March 24, 2009

By Nick Pitruzzello – Wayne Young is the new head coach for the golf team. Personally, Young has played golf for over thirty years and has participated in golf tournaments all across northern California. Golf is now a major part of Young’s life.

“Although I am the coach of the school’s team now, I didn’t play golf when I was back in high school,” Young said. “I was a baseball player.”

Senior Collin Yee enjoys having Young as his coach.

“Wayne is a really good golf coach. He really understands the game and knows what he is talking about,” Yee said.

Young already has some coaching experience under his belt. In the past, he has coached other sports, besides golf, like basketball, around the northern California area.

Young was offered the head coaching job after he had heard about the job opening from other coaches and family friends. Athletic director Mike Tripp was looking for a full-time head coach and Young seemed fit for the job.

As a coach, Young doesn’t expect much to come from his team except that they enjoy the game and learn it while being competitive at the same time.

“Besides just playing a sport, I want them to take in the life values that come from it while having fun at the same time,” Young said.

The golf team consists of nine players. There are three seniors, three juniors, one sophomore, and two freshmen on the team. In their first match on Mar. 12 against American, the team defeated the Eagles for their first league win.
