Freshmen outnumber seniors

March 24, 2009

By Christian Castillo – Young swimmers are stepping up to the diving block, as there are twice as many freshmen swimming on girls varsity than seniors. This is the first time this has happened in coach Bryan Accurso’s sixteen years of coaching swim.

“We have a really young team this season, but that doesn’t make us any less competitive,” Accurso said.

All of the freshmen except Caitlin Jorgens played water polo in the fall season, to keep in shape for swimming. Jorgens played volleyball instead of waterpolo in the fall.

“I’m really honored to be swimming on varsity; I think that it’s a real privilege to be able to swim varsity in my freshman year of high school,” freshman Shannon Grant said. Grant placed third in the 100 Freestyle in last week’s meet against American.

The varsity squad beat American 32 points to 128 points and placed first in the 200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay, 200 Intermediate Medley, 200 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle, along with other events.
