This year, students who are PTSA members will be receiving “muffin money” that can be used to “buy” a muffin or a beverage during finals. PTSA has been selling snacks during finals for several years now. PTSA president Melinda Kufeld said that they were trying to figure out a way to get students to join PTSA and that watching students swarm the table during finals prompted the idea.
“The term “muffin money” was mentioned during a planning meeting and simply stuck,” Kufeld said.
ASB will be distributing the “money” during READ a few days before finals. Every student member will be receiving $3 for each semester.
” I think the muffin money is a good incentive and neat idea. I’m looking forward to those yummy blueberry muffins as finals come marching along,” junior Michelle Yee said.
There are currently 110 PTSA student members, an increase from the 85 members last year.
“I joined the PTSA to be more aware of what teachers and parents are doing to help the school,” junior Marc LePrince said.
In addition to “muffin money,” student members also get half off the price of the mock SAT exam, which will take place at WHS on Jan. 30. They also have a chance to receive a scholarships, if they are a member when they are a senior. Besides the monetary benefits, students can attend meetings, be part of a committee, or even become an officer.
“Some students do not have the time needed to devote to ASB, but would like to develop their leadership skills. PTSA is a good opportunity to do so,” Kufeld said.
PTSA meets on the first Thursday of the month at either 6:45 or 7:00 in the library.
“Students are welcome! Come and listen or bring your ideas!” Kufeld said.
PTSA is also tentatively holding a mock ACT on Feb. 27, which will be $10 for non-PTSA members and $5 for PTSA members. If members are taking both exams, the cost is $15. PTSA is working with Revolution Prep to start SAT and ACT prep courses on campus in the spring.
