Fremont Unified School District launched their biannual Young Authors’ Contest during the month of January.
The competition gives all FUSD students a chance to compose an elementary-aged fictional storybook complete with original artwork. Each school submits their top ten entries to the district for review and the top three entries for each grade, kindergarten through twelfth grade, of the district will be invited to the Young Authors’ Tea. The winners’ storybooks will be placed in all FUSD elementary school libraries as well as the Fremont Main Library.
The amount of entries from WHS varies yearly. When more than ten entries are received, a panel of English teachers evaluates the books.
“It is a chance for [students] to showcase their skills outside of the classroom,” English department chair Sharon Jones said.
The contest has sparked the interest of several Washington students.
“The Young Authors contest is a good way to practice writing skills in an interesting and creative way,” junior Sarah Kowalski said. She is considering submitting a piece for the competition.
The deadline for submissions is Jan 25.
