Celebrities dying in 2009

December 8, 2009

The year 2009 seems to be a bad year to be a celebrity. Large iconic figures seemed to pass away all at once, for example Bea Arthur from Golden Girls and Les Paul, the singer who made guitars. Or in Michael Jackson’s and Farrah Fawcett’s case who share the date of their death: June 25. Most people were surprised about how many famous people passed away this following year; others can hardly believe it.

Some like junior Sarah Renteria half-heartedly expects to see Billy Mays do a new Oxy Clean commercial with his distinctively animated voice. She’s disappointed to find that they don’t play any of his commercials after his unexpected death on June 28. Growing up watching Billy Mays commercials was something that Renteria was just used to and when he no longer in any commercials she was perplexed about his absence in infomercials.

“The good die young,” senior Ashley Baskett said.

Baskett comments on all of the deaths, mainly the unexpected deaths including Michael Jackson and Adam Goldstein, also known as DJ AM. All of their deaths shocked the nation, especially in Goldstein’s case since he was able to survive a jet crash where four other people died to only die a year later as a result of his own actions. The student body found the irony in Goldstein going through a miracle only to be killed by his choice of lifestyle to be almost comical, if it weren’t for the fact that he is dead.

“You never really think about them [people] until their dead. And everyone’s basically the same when they’re dead. It depends after you’re dead and where they’re going [heaven or hell]. We spend more of your time dead then we do alive anyway,” sophomore Joshua Lu said.

Lu has a different take on the buzz on celebrity deaths that seem to come with 2009. His thoughts aren’t so much focused on the fact that they’re famous, but that they’re people who die like everyone else. Lu’s thoughts are more focused on the fact that these people did die, but it’s not up to us to decide on whether or not these people’s lives are significant, but that it’s up to the higher power to decide that and place that person, famous or not, in the place that they belong to.

Death is something inevitable as hard as people seem to avoid it, or how people toy with the concept of death making it seem trivial. It happens to everyone, including the starlets that seem invincible.

    You quoted me wrong.:P
For the second sentence, it’s supposed to say that we are all basically the same when we are dead.(its says alive)

I agree with Lu’s view. It’s true that though these icons were famous, they are human like any one of us. It matters not where they’ve been, but where they’re going when they’re dead.
