English teacher Jeffrey Speckels usually hangs out with his friends during Halloween and tries to find parties to go to. He can still recall family and friend Halloween traditions. His family used to make popcorn balls and caramel apples. His dad also told ghost stories. The tradition he remembers the most was when his neighborhood made a haunted house.

“One time, my friend’s dad scared us. He came in and hid behind a wall we made. We were suspicious so we went to check what was wrong and he jumped up and scared us,” Speckels said.

He believes most communities are not as close as they used to be when he was younger. He also thinks parents are more afraid and cautious about their trick-or-treating children.

“Halloween is the night of mischief and chaos, but it’s becoming more chaotic than a fun family holiday,” Speckels said.

Despite the changes, Speckels still thinks Halloween is a great holiday. He enjoyed finding costumes as a kid. Speckels believes Halloween is a magical holiday for kids to have fun dressing up.
