With the wrestling season in full swing, WHS wrestlers are striving to be at the peak of their physical fitness. They must condition rigorously in order to maintain their weight and muscle to fat ratio. It takes a lot of dedication and focus to lose this weight and improve their skills. It tests one’s motivation and interest in the sport.

“Yeah, it’s definitely really hard, but its one of the most important aspects you need to get ready for the upcoming season,” Senior Dominic Cesena said.

When a wrestler is not fit for the season there can be terrible results as they will start very sluggish and slow. This will have an important impact on their ability to take down their opponents. Senior Waleed Salemi uses a strict diet to maintain his weight and build more muscle. ”I try to eat things that are packed with protein, such as eggs” said Waleed. Waleed also spends a lot of time lifting weights and exercising to convert the protein he eats into muscle. “A diet is only half of the struggle” he says. However, the struggle to lose weight and build muscle has its benefits. Wrestling is a sport that is built around strength and size as it will allow wrestlers to effectively take down opponents. Waleed also says that it allows him to get him in shape and live a healthier life. Conditioning for wrestling has started well before the season has started and continues throughout the season. It is proving to be effective as our team has been very successful this year.

Track and field has another month until official practices start, yet some athletes have already begun to attend meets and races. The most recent meets were the Indoor State Qualifier Meet at UC Davis on Jan. 7 and the Indoor State Qualifier Meet at UC Berkeley on Jan. 14. Qualifying for specific times in either of these meets would allow athletes to advance to the California Indoor State Meet Invitational at California State University, Fresno, on Jan. 28. “There’s athletes from all over California so it’s going to be pretty tough qualifying for the state invitational,” long distance runner Matthew Young said.

At the UC Davis Meet, only pole vaulters Liam Sheridan and Kyle O’Hollaren competed from Washington. Sheridan tied his personal best of 11 feet and 6 inches. Unfortunately, O’Hollaren failed on all three attempts. At the UC Berkeley meet, more Washington athletes competed. Stephen Cheung and Da’rell Calvin competed in the 55m dash and the 55m hurdles. Neither qualified for either event. “I am disappointed. I missed the qualifying time by 0.16 seconds because I hit the first hurdle,” Cheung said. On a more positive note, Jack Champion qualified for the long jump. He jumped 43 feet and 8 inches. Long distance runner Nolan Peterson ran the mile and two mile. He qualified for the two mile but not for the mile. “I wish the best to Jack and Nolan at the state meet as well as to our team for this coming season!”Sprinter Tejawsi Thota said.

My friends, Jack Champion, Kyle O`Hollaren and I (Liam Sheridan) began training for the upcoming track during the first week of school in September. We trained Monday through Thursday and sometimes on weekends. In the last month we have also competed in multiple all-comers track meets around California. Originally it was just the three of us, however we gained one more athlete when Lauren Caracappa began training with us. Now with the season only weeks away we have over 15 athletes training regularly to improve speed and strength for this upcoming season. We are all anxiously awaiting February 6th which marks the first day of the official season. League meets do not start for at least a month after that date, however those of us who have been competing and training in the off season will be enjoying competing almost every weekend through the end of the season, beginning with an all-comer meet at UC Berkeley in early February. We all hope this will be a successful Track season and we hope to go undefeated in league meets.

New Year’s was a couple of days ago and it marked the start of 2012. All the years have been important in shaping me into who I am, and I have a feeling that this year will be the most pivotal and memorable. This is the year when I will be receiving college acceptance and rejection letters, attending Senior Ball, graduating and receiving a diploma, turning eighteen, enjoying a wonderful summer, going off to college, and doing many exciting events. It’s surreal to think that in a matter of months, I will be off to college and live in dorms with other college students. I am anxious for the transition from adolescent to young adult and being an independent person. Then again, I am also sad to leave the comfort of Fremont, a city where I have lived in my entire life. I have high hopes for this year and I am ecstatic for whatever this year brings.

Another fire alarm went off on Friday, Dec. 2, one of three that have been triggered so far this school year. We all participate in these evacuations, but many students don’t actually know why they are leaving their classrooms.

It is natural to assume that a fire alarm is a drill, but of the three evacuations we’ve conducted, only one was an actual fire drill. The evacuation on Friday was not a drill. Like the other unplanned evacuations, it was set off by particulate matter that got into the fire detector of a classroom. This is usually related to cooking, and we haven’t actually had any fires this year. Many people aren’t aware of this, but California’s Education Code only requires that high schools have two fire drills per year at a minimum, a much smaller number than the requirement for elementary and middle schools, which is one per month. These drills are usually set up to coincide with school assemblies so that they’re more convenient. The principal, the superintendent and a few other school officials should have access to records of the fire evacuations conducted throughout the year. (Code of Regulations, Title 5, 550)

There is also a California high school requirement of one earthquake drill per semester. As we have already had an earthquake drill this year we can expect not to have another until second semester. There is also one fire drill planned for next semester, but there may be more than that due to detectors being triggered by accident. There may be more lock-downs, as they aren’t dictated by the state but by school districts, in cooperation with local law enforcement. (Education Code 35294)

Opinions on school drills vary. Some people think that they’re beneficial; for example, senior Vivian Pham said that “they’re good because a lot of freshmen don’t know where to go.” Others, however, find that the drills seem unnecessary. “They interrupt class time. If there’s a fire we know what to do already,” said junior Shubhreen Kaur. Perhaps it would be a good idea to find a way to make the detectors less sensitive so that there are fewer unplanned evacuations, but in this situation it may be better safe than sorry. If there is a real fire, we can be sure to know about it in time to evacuate.

According to Mr. Miller and Officer Berlin there are multiple drills planned for the near future, so students should be prepared to shut down or evacuate their classrooms.

Two Lucky supermarkets in Fremont, along with more than 20 other of the Bay Area chain stores, discovered a severe problem in their self-check-out lanes on Nov. 11. It appears that thieves have tampered with the card-readers, secretly attaching card-skimmers that store the card and PIN numbers of any customer who uses the self-check-out. Some stores even had tiny cameras hidden near the key pads that would record the customers typing in their financial information. Lucky claims to have no idea how or when anyone could have installed these devices in the stores. Senior Johnfavour Ng said that the whole incident was “Shady to say the least.” On Nov. 23, the supermarket chain warned the public about the danger of possible credit card and debit card scamming, and since then the stores and banks have been inundated with complaints of identity theft—some people losing up to $700.

“It makes me want to use cash now rather than my debit card,” says senior Jake Nichols. “I feel scared about spending my money with my debit card. I can’t really trust any kind of card-swiping pay system for a while now.”

As of now, banks are having to reimburse their clients’ losses with bank-owned money. No reports of identity theft were reported by customers who had used a regular check-out lane. The Secret Service is now involved in this investigation into who is responsible for this massive case of fraudulent activity. They are calling the scamming devices “extremely sophisticated”. Senior Jonathan Hui was surprised by this and exclaimed, “Cash!” as a way to fix this problem. Save Mart Supermarkets operates the Lucky chains and advises anyone using a debit or credit card to examine any card-reading machine carefully for any unusual nuances before proceeding to input private information.

Cyber Monday, the first Monday after Thanksgiving, made its debut on Nov. 28, 2005 in a Shop.org press release called “Cyber Monday’s Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year.” It’s often referred to as the “online equivalent of Black Friday” because it gives shoppers a second, and sometimes better, chance to cash in on deals they may have missed on Black Friday.
This online shopping spree is traditionally on Monday because that is the day when employees return to their offices and purchase items on their work computers. Now, employers aren’t the only people participating—students are purchasing as well. Junior Angie Lombardi says she bought a jean jacket from American Eagle online.
This year, shoppers spent a total of nearly $1.25 billion, topping the $1 billion from last year. This event has become so big that Cyber Monday became Cyber Week. In 2011, “E-tailers” gained approximately $6 billion in sales. Revenues increased by a staggering 22% compared to last year.
Online shopping accounts for 9% of the overall holiday spending. An enormous variety of items can be purchased online, including clothes, electronics, toys, and general merchandise. Senior Jared Javier got headphones and gifts for Christmas all online.
The two major corporations that had the most online traffic were J.C. Penny and Macy’s. An incentive to Cyber Monday is that shipping is usually free. Free shipping was applied to 63% of sales, which is up from 52% in 2010.

Cyber week may have passed, but there are still plenty of great deals to find online throughout this holiday season.
