Ilma Husain is a junior at Washington and this is her first year with the Hatchet. She joined Journalism because she wants to become a better writer and learn to report. Ilma’s favorite subject is English, since she loves reading and discussing written works in class. She even plans on majoring in English in college, though she isn’t certain about other aspects of her future. Outside of Journalism, Ilma keeps herself busy. She is enrolled in multiple AP and honors courses this year and enjoys watching movies, which is why she is also taking Film. Additionally, Ilma is involved in multiple school clubs and activities. She has been on Washington’s badminton team since her freshman year and is in Link Crew. She is also president of the Washington MSA (Muslim Student Association) and Key Club bulletin editor. Ilma certainly has a lot to contribute to the Hatchet Online team.

Jill Huynh, The Hatchet

Jill Huynh is a senior at Washington High school this year who took up journalism to learn a different style of writing. She likes to get her work all done at a good, if not great, quality. Jill, along doing all her work, juggles with gymnastics. She has been involved with gymnastics for four years and was given the opportunity to be a co-captain for her team on varsity. Her inspiration for gymnastics would be her role model, Shawn Johnson. She is a gold medalist in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Jill, one day, hopes to acquire that skill. Besides gymnastics, she has many things that interest her such as hanging out with her friends, going on new and fun adventures when she has the time, watching good horror films, and loves to work with animals. Jill is a great student and friend in school or out of. She is very reliable person for any situation she is involved with.

Maleka Mau, The Hatchet

Maleka Mau is a junior at Washington High School, and this is her first year in journalism and she is extremely excited! She took journalism to become a stronger writer. Maleka was born in China and lived there for six months. She is an only child and enjoys the peace and quiet. She is very enthusiastic and extremely friendly. She expects junior year to be difficult but is ready for the challenge. She enjoys playing tennis, and is a member of the Washington High School Girls’ Tennis Team. “ I feel like tennis is a great sport and an opportunity to meet new people while releasing stress.” Reading, photography, camping and traveling are some of her interests, just to name a few. Maleka is extremely motivated to do well in school and has great plans for the future. After high school, Maleka plans on attending college to study medical social work.

Bharathi Gandi, The Hatchet

Bharathi Gandi is currently a senior here at Washington High School. This is her second year in Mr. Skillings’ sixth period Journalism class. As co-editor of the Features section of the Hatchet newspaper, Bharathi hopes to “entertain and inform” her fellow Huskies with high-quality stories and top-notch page designs. A highly dedicated and driven student, she is looking forward to working alongside the class to make this volume of the Hatchet our best one yet. Some of Bharathi’s hobbies are playing tennis, drawing, painting, watching television, and lastly, singing along to a wide range of jolly tunes throughout sixth period. Bharathi’s plans for the future include becoming a surgeon as well as possibly writing a journal for a medical magazine. For now, Bharathi is enthusiastically awaiting all of the perks that come along with the highly-anticipated senior year, namely, Senior Ball, which this year, will be on the same date as her birthday.

Sylvia Liang, a junior at Washington High School, is a well rounded person. She excels in academics as well as sports. She currently runs for the cross country and swims for WHS. Her current goals for the future are becoming a doctor or a writer. On her free time, she likes to enjoy time to herself by resting to save up energy for an amazing adventure. She enjoys reading, and experiencing new things like traveling to new places and trying a bunch of new food. One reason why she signed up for Journalism is that she wants to become a better writer. As a kid, Sylvia always loved writing and soon after, writing became one of her favorite things to do. She loves to write because writing is a way for her to express herself. In life, Sylvia is always in pursuit of happiness that would keep her smiling.

Adrianne Manseau, a cheerful, bubbly girl of sixteen was born in Fremont, California. She is currently a senior at Washington High School, and has been there since freshman year. Her passion for gymnastics had started nine years ago and she is about to compete for her ninth season. Adrianne is hardworking and determined. Even though she procrastinates, she still gets her work done. Not only does she love to cook, but also loves to shop. Her pets include one cat and four fish. Her favorite color is aqua blue. Other than her love for gymnastics she also loves music. Adrianne also wants to travel to Europe, especially France. She loves going on vacations. Just this summer she went to New York and loved it there. Moreover, her favorite movie is Finding Nemo, thus this explains her favorite character which is Nemo.

Coleana Soliman Mount was born on June 26, 1995 and is currently a junior at Washington High School. Her favorite subject in school is English since she has always had an interest reading and writing. She wishes she could be a math wiz as well. She is taking journalism because she aspires to become a broadcasting journalist in the future. In her spare time, she hangs out with her friends or dances at the studio in Mission Dance and Performing Arts. In addition, her favorite activities include skating, swimming and watching major league baseball. She has been employed at the Grocery Outlet in Hayward for a little over a year and she loves eating burritos from the local taqueria next to her work. The only country that she has been to outside of the United States is the Philippines because she has family residing there.

Tanusree Munshi actively participates in her school and community; being a second-year Link Crew Leader and a devout member of Environmental Club, she has also worked at the Aqua Adventure water park in Fremont. Born on May 27, 1994, she has since traveled to Canada, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, and South Korea. Tanusree’s wide variety of interests range from blogging and reading to socializing and volunteering. She wishes she could retain information by reading something once, which would greatly benefit her when studying biology, her favorite subject. Tanusree’s most memorable high school experience is her Junior Prom. As her time at Washington comes to an end, she’s most excited for Senior Week. She plans to become a pharmacist after high school and hopes to eventually travel the world. Tanusree chose to become a school journalist to “keep up with events at Washington and want[s] to keep the people informed.”

Earnest and determined, Meilin Liang is a person of great compassion and discipline. Her hard work and composed demeanor is shown through her ability to keep up with all the activities she is involved with at school. Along with three AP classes, she is also a major part of the girl’s tennis team. She is also involved with environmental club, key club, and link crew. Her favorite high school memories consist of the Indian multicultural dance and her tennis match against players from Mission High school. Moving on, her favorite subject in school is math because of the gust of accomplishment she experiences after solving a challenging problem. Apart from school, she practices guitar and wishes to be musically talented. Some facts about her are that her favorite color is lavender, countries she has visited are China and Mexico, and her birthday is on August 15th. In the future, she wishes to have a good life, travel the world, and have a successful career in the medical field.
