‘Leap Year’ trips

Written by Htoo Htoo Lu

A guy and a girl go on a journey together, during which they grow closer and fall in love. Sounds familiar?

Leap Year is a typical romantic comedy with a predictable plot. Although the actual length of the journey isn’t that long, it feels drawn-out. The only thing that keeps the audience interested is the strong chemistry between Amy Adams and Matthew Goode.

The film is about a young woman named Anna (Adams) who is eager to marry her boyfriend, Jeremy (Adam Scott). When Jeremy does not propose to her at a fancy restaurant and instead gives her a pair of earrings, Anna learns from her father of an Irish tradition where women propose to their boyfriends on leap year day.

Anna follows Jeremy to Ireland when he goes to a business trip so she can propose to him. On her way, the flights are postponed due to a storm. Somehow, she is able to get a boat to sail to Ireland. She meets a young-pub owner, Declan (Goode), who also drives a cab. He agrees to drive her for money and on their way, they face many obstacles and gradually fall in love with each other.

Leap Year seems too coincidental to be true. The girl happens to get in touch with her father after a long time just when she is eager for her boyfriend to propose to her. The father decides to show up somehow just to tell her of this Irish tradition that happens only once every four years. Coincidentally, her boyfriend happens to be in Ireland on this leap year for a business trip. Furthermore, the weather has to be stormy on the day she planned to travel.

Although this movie lacks plot and excitement, it is an appropriate movie to watch with family and friends. In addition, the scenery in the movie is beautiful; there are scenes of mountains, villages and other beautiful places in Ireland. Leap Year is a decent film to watch, not for the plot, but for the beautiful scenery and a few lighthearted laughs.

Verdict: C
