Black Student Union activity coordinator junior Sandra Njitanji’s idea to showcase an African fashion show became a reality Nov. 20.

“I wanted to do this fashion show because it was a great chance to exploit some of the different cultural talents and fashions at WHS,” Njitanji said.

The first annual BSU fashion show took place in the school cafeteria. The night was filled with entertainment, which included the fashion show; dancing by Njitanji and sophomore Ashley Rusike; singing by junior Maryanne Wainana, junior Shadin Awad and sophomore Laura Cayabyab and an original step performances by the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority.

Njitanji’s mom and aunt donated traditional and modern fashion pieces from West Africa.

The profits were donated to the HERS Breast Cancer foundation.

“Word will spread to the community about what we are all about, and that will help us a lot,” HERS board of director Liz Barron said.

With the success they had this year, the BSU plans to host another fashion show next year.
